Sarah Palin Loses Defamation Suit, Requests New Trial

Writer: Joseph Perry, Esq.Joseph Perry, Esq.

Last month, jurors found The New York Times did not defame former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. At issue was an editorial in June 2017 that the NYT wrongly claimed a link between an advertisement from Palin’s political action committee and a mass shooting in Arizona. The verdict came a day after U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff ruled he would set aside the jury’s verdict, whether guilty or not guilty, and dismiss Palin’s case. However, that was not the end of the matter. Palin’s lawyers claimed they would seek a new trial and file several other motions that would scrutinize the timing of Judge Rakoff’s decision.
