Duke University Press Certifies Union

In a Twitter announcement earlier this week, Duke University Press stated that the NLRB overruled objections to DUP's election to unionize. In March 2021, DUP employees announced they intended to unionize as a unit of The NewsGuild, TNG-CWA Local 3203. In June, employees voted to unionize, but the eligibility of seven votes was challenged: two by Duke University and five by the union.

In its mission statement, the DUP union states that it is addressing "constant turnover, extended vacancies, disruptive reorganizations, lack of professional growth opportunities, patterns of discrimination, inconsistent enforcement of policies, and compensation that is not commensurate with our quality of work and years of experience as professionals (or the cost of living in Durham and around the Triangle)." DUP is the latest media organization to unionize, including The Atlantic, Politico, and MSNBC, since last year.
